Mossberg Solution: Motorola Q vs. Palm Treo 700p - The Attachment Test
The Mossberg Solution -- Personal Technology from The Wall Street Journal: Smartphones Get Smarter
Walt Mossberg reviews the new Motorola Q by pitting it against the latest Treo, the 700p running Palm OS. He finds that while the Q has an edge on price and pocketability (it's thinner and cheaper than the Treo), he likes the simplicity of the Palm OS and points to the Treo's superior attachment support as reasons why he still recommends Treo as his smartphone of choice.
I plan to blog about some of my own thoughts on Mobile Attachments soon. For now, you can check out some of Mossberg's conclusions on mobile attachment support on various smartphone platforms in this February 2006 article from SmartMoney.com

Q is thinner, but it not that important. Much more important is touchscreen and battery power. Without touchscreen it is like a desktop computer without a mouse. Try to edit a speadsheet on Q, it is a nightmare! And battery life is far from being acceptable. ..

I've had just about every phone in the MS platform going back to the Samsung SH600. While the Razor is very thin and the Qwery keyboard helps - the OS seems to lag - I'm just waiting for someone to create an hour glass :) The Q seems more geared to a smaller company that doesn't require the robust requirements for lots of email and other 3rd party applications loaded.
Hopefully when Verizon releases the Microsoft Feature Pak that allows for push email - it will fix some the issues. Just fair warning to anyone with a MS device becareful as some of the hardware devices wipe everything when the feature pak is added. (SO BACK-UP ALL OF YOUR DATA)
