Is Push Email Necessary?

AllAboutSymbian.com: Push email - Help, Hype or Hindrance?

This morning Steve Litchfield from AllAboutSymbian posted his thoughts on whether or not push email is really necessary. Here’s an excerpt of his thoughts:

…we're talking about email here, the original time-independent communications medium. An email might take hours to get from A to B, depending on what's happening around the Internet. And the whole point of email is that you want the person to get it but it's not critical exactly when it's read. Certainly not to within a few minutes, anyway. After all, if the message was that important, you'd have telephoned and spoken in person.

The link above will take you to Steve’s full article, which also has a lot of interesting comments. You can read on for some of my personal thoughts.

Personally, from an enterprise standpoint, I think saying that email is ‘time independent’ is a slightly old fashioned look at email. Maybe email was time independent (and maybe it still should be), but in the enterprise space I think email has taken the place of the phone in many situations. Email has become the less intrusive version of a phone call (it’s much easier to answer an email during a keynote speech than it is to take a call), and often there are expectations for messages to be answered not only in a timely manner, but sometimes in an immediate manner.

Do I need push email? Most of the time, no. But if you take a step back and look at push technology as a whole, I can see a great deal of value in it. Consider your calendar. I have appointments and meetings that often change several times, sometimes with short notice. I find it very helpful to have my calendar data ‘pushed’. I’ve also had my fair share of situations where I’m in need of an attachment while on the road, and push email helps make sure that I have it as soon as its available so I’m not wasting time (pretty difficult to send an attachment with a phone call). Again, maybe it’s not necessary; maybe updates every 10-15 minutes are sufficient 80-90% of the time. But if the technology is there at a reasonable cost it seems logical to take advantage of it so you know you’re covered in that other 10%. Feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts!
