Customer Feedback: RoadSync

DataViz: RoadSync customer feedbackBack in February we posted some Documents To Go customer feedback comments with responses to their questions. Since there are a variety of new devices on the horizon and Exchange 2007 is starting to take hold, we figured it was time to do the same thing for RoadSync. Here you’ll find some comments from actual customers about RoadSync and our responses.

As always, we love getting feedback from our users, so keep it coming.

"Could you please implement that Roadsync will sync the pictures from the contacts in Outlook as well? Thanks!"

Our main concern over the last year or so with RoadSync has been to implement the features of ActiveSync that would be most important to the enterprise user. This would include features like push, remote wipe, security/IT policies, meeting response, message flagging, subfolders, etc. The ‘that would be nice’ features like contact pictures will hopefully come with time.

There are also some factors - data usage, sync time, device memory, etc. - that come into play with a feature like this. The best suggestion I can give at this point is to keep leaving feedback if you’re interested in features like this. The more demand we see, the sooner it will be implemented.

"Is it me or does Roadsync seem to drain battery awfully fast on the N95....I had no issues with P990i and Roadsync."

Actually I just got my hands on an N95 this morning so I’ll soon be able to share my experiences in regards to battery life and other things. For now, based on what I’ve heard/read, it’s not so much that RoadSync drains the battery fast; it’s more that everything drains the battery fast. Battery life seems to be one of the biggest concerns I’ve heard thus far with this device. And, if there are battery issues, it would certainly manifest itself through the use of RoadSync or any push email app. Hopefully after a few days of playing I’ll have some more info on this.

Mark H. - RoadSync: General
"Are you going to make a Road Sync version for the new Apple iPhone? If Apple sells as many phones as it thinks it is going to , I bet you guys could sell a lot of Road sync for the iPhone."

Ah, the iPhone. Good question. To the best of my knowledge, the iPhone will not be supporting applications from 3rd party developers. Odds are good that the type of development kit we would need from the Apple will not be available.

However, a quick look at our website will show you that we have a commitment to bring Exchange ActiveSync to as many platfoms as possible. If there is a way for us to develop for this new platform, it would certainly be possible for RoadSync to make its way to the iPhone. But, at this point, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Jeremy K. - RoadSync: Symbian UIQ
"When will a version supporting Exchange 2007 features (roadsync version 3) be available for UIQv3?"

There’s not a whole lot I can say about this right now but I’ll try to shed a little light.

First of all, lets be clear on the current state of ‘Exchange ActiveSync (Powered by DataViz)’ for UIQ 3 devices. Currently you can sync with Exchange 2007 and the current feature set (Push, GAL, Remote Wipe, etc) should function properly.

One of the major questions here (for DataViz) is related to the proliferation of Exchange 2007. Quite frankly, the masses aren’t feeling the pain of being without the Exchange 2007 features at this point. When demand starts picking up, Exchange ‘07 features for UIQ 3 will likely work its way up our (quite lengthy) list of development projects. We definitely see a great deal of potential in UIQ and we are committed to continued development for UIQ 3 devices. However, when it comes to time frames for updates, it’s just a bit too early to say.

Subfolders and Server Search for Nokia S60 FP1 devices (i.e. N95, E90)

For those of you using devices with Nokia’s updated OS like the N95, you might find that some RoadSync specific features do not function as you might expect. Currently, the functionality surrounding “Subfolders” and “Server Search” is limited. Issues are as follows:

• Subfolders - Move, file navigate and manage your inbox messages into a corresponding subfolder. All changes will be successfully synchronized with Exchange and reflected in Outlook. Unfortunately, at this time, you are unable to view messages within subfolders on the handset due to a display issue with the S60 3.1 OS.

• Server Search – For those users who are syncing against Exchange Server 2007, you may have noticed the extreme usefulness of being able to “Search the Server” for mail items that may not currently reside on the handset, inbox or within the specified date range. Unfortunately, although you are able to enter the search criteria and perform the search without receiving an error, there is currently no way to display the results due to the same S60 3.1 display issue.
We are currently working with Nokia Support to identify and address these two important issues and a fix will most likely be made available from Nokia in the form of a ROM update. We’re not sure when a fix/update will be available, but you can let us know if you’d like to be notified when something is available for you.

@ Tibor,

Right now it is a bit difficult to tell which subfolder an email went into if you have Outlook filtering the messages. We're looking into improvements for that process for the next release.

@ Steve,

We are definitely looking to add subfolders for UIQ. You'll notice that we do have subfolder support for WM 2003 and Series 60; it's only a matter of time before subfolders (and some other new and exciting features) make it to UIQ.

Symbian UIQ

Will you support sub folders at any point??
If the aim (as stated) is to concentrate on enterprise level features, this must surely be the biggest flaw out there??

I use rules in Outlook to sort the incoming mail. While they are coming through all right, how can I know in which subfolder I have a new message in when I hear the alert ? Is there a "unread", bold title sort of thing ?

Roadsync: Contact Picture

Someone already mentioned that would be great if pictures of contacts would synncronise as well. I would like to make a comment on that as well as on the answer received :

It is not simple "would be good" it is a MUST. Pictures now days an integrated part of the contacts. Very important and I do not believe that syncing 1 more filed would make any difference from development poitn of you at all. Especially not, as I checked, when I synced the database with RoadSync, its final sitze is : 350 kb, obviously without pictures. Syncing exactly the same database with Pc suite including the pictures, the database became 870 Kb. I am talking about over 2300 contacts, and 70% of them has picture as well. So when the answer mention :"data usage, sync time, device memory" it is not as serious concert as it is sounds, more like a question of deciding weather to do it or not. Especially, if they would decide (if they trully worry about what they mentioned) to do it in a way as an option, means, that within Contact option, the user can set weather he/she wish the pictures syncronized or not. Thats all.

So, is there anyay how cóyou could be convinced to do this small development to sync as well the contact pictures ?

It would be so so so important, that personally would be ready to pay extra money for it (certianly whitin an acceptable limit).
