Palm Foleo & Documents To Go
DataViz Optimizes Documents To Go for Palm Foleo
Earlier this week, Palm announced the first ‘mobile companion’ in the form of the Linux-based Foleo. DataViz will continue its long and successful relationship with Palm by providing Office document support on this new device.
Foleo is designed to be a companion for your smartphone by providing a larger screen, full keyboard, and extended battery life. It will also include instant on/off capabilities, SD card and Bluetooth support, as well as a built in web browser.
Documents To Go will give Foleo users the ability to view, edit and create Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files (including email attachments) and it will include InTact Technology which will insure that all of your original document formatting is maintained.
“Over the years, Palm and DataViz have built a successful relationship bringing Documents To Go to Palm products and providing users with a great experience. The capability to view and edit Microsoft Office documents on the Foleo will prove to be a powerful business tool for mobile professionals.” - Mark Bercow, Senior VP of Business Development, Palm, Inc.Foleo will be available this summer for $499 (after $100 rebate).

Comments
Vance,
I showed your question and blog post to one of our Foleo experts (Nick G.) and I believe he has posted a reply. Hope it helps!
For those of you who are curious, here are Nick's comments:
"As Ben said, Menu == Ctrl, so no worries there. WTG does support Ctrl + arrows to move around. There are no Home or End keys so what we did was use Alt + right to move to the end of the current line, Alt + left to move to the beginning of the line, Alt + down to move to the end of the document, and Alt + up to move to the beginning of the document.
You can also use Shift in combination with these to do selections as well.
The only things missing are Menu + backspace to delete the previous word and Menu + delete to delete the next word, but at least you can use the shortcuts to select the word and then delete it."

Would you be able to comment on this story:
http://profoleo.com/2007/09/foleo-out-of-control/
Specifically, how will keyboard navigation in Documents to Go work with a keyboard that has no control/command key? On a laptop/desktop, I can use Ctrl+Arrow to hop around quicker in a block of text, and Ctrl+Shift+Arrow to select text faster. I can also hit Ctrl+Backspace to delete the current word? Will those types of keyboard navigations not work on the Foleo?
Thanks much,
Vance

Palm recognized the importance of a top of the line document solution for the Foleo which is why they decided to extend our relationship to that device. I don’t know exactly how their E-Mail synchronization is going to work with Foleo, but Palm has incorporated their own email applications in the past (such as Versamail) so you might expect them to go that route again as they venture into the Linux world with Foleo. If DataViz sees demand for an aftermarket email solution after Foleo hits the streets we would consider the opportunity. However, we’ll all have to wait until it’s released to know the exact details of what you can and can’t do with email on the Foleo.
As far as Inbox To Go being discontinued, I would say that there is a clear evolution taking place in the world of mobile email. Demand for an email redirecting solution like Inbox To Go is declining and DataViz has decided that it is much more beneficial for us and for our customers if we focus our attention on our Exchange ActiveSync solution, RoadSync. This may be disappointing to those who have gotten comfortable with Inbox To Go, but DataViz strongly believes that as devices and wireless technology become more advanced, ActiveSync will be the preferred solution for mobile email.

I was hoping to use Inbox ToGo with the Palm Foleo BUT ... it seems DataViz is discontinuing Inbox ToGo. What's up? Why? What does DataViz recommend as a replacement? Will you have e-mail that is compatible with the Foleo and Palm Treo?
