DataViz and MontaVista

Bringing Documents To Go to Linux handhelds!

logo_mvista.jpgAnother example of DataViz’s commitment to bring Microsoft Office support to the world’s most popular handhelds came to light this morning as they, along with Linux leader MontaVista, announced the availability of Documents To Go for the Mobilinux 5.0 mobile operating system.

MontaVista will resell Documents To Go to mobile device manufacturers looking to implement Mobilinux 5.0. This will provide Mobilinux-powered devices with the ability to open and view Word, Excel & PowerPoint attachments. DataViz and MontaVista will also work together to implement additional features (such as editing) at the request of the developer or device manufacturer.

“DataViz and MontaVista are currently working with a major hardware manufacturer to enable its mobile customers to work with the types of documents they most commonly use. Documents To Go expands the power of the device. We expect many more mobile developers to be eager to provide Documents To Go functionality to their device users. It’s like taking your office in your pocket wherever you take a Mobilinux-powered device.” - Jim Ready, CTO/founder, MontaVista Software.

iPhone: 28% US Market Share

And 6.5% of worldwide smart device market.

iphone.jpgThe fourth quarter of 2007 definitely proved fruitful for Apple in the smartphone market. Apple Insider (via Canalys) reports that the iPhone reached #2 in US market share with 28%. RIM continued leading the way with 41% and Palm was a distant third with 9%.

"When you consider that it launched part way through the year, with limited operator and country coverage, and essentially just one product, Apple has shown very clearly that it can make a difference and has sent a wakeup call to the market leaders," - Pete Cunningham, senior analyst, Canalys.

With a new 16GB iPhone now available and third party apps on their way soon, it certainly seems like the sky is the limit for Apple in the smartphone space.

Will those third party apps include Documents To Go? Still hard to say, but if you want it, let us know!

Ubitexx and DataViz

Providing OTA distribution of Documents To Go

ubitexx logoHistorically, much of the growth of Documents To Go has happened from the bottom up. End users feel the pain of being without Office document support on their mobile device and look for acceptable solutions on their own. Often this will trickle up through a company and become more of a global solution for a given organization.

However, today it seems that more and more companies are learning the importance of a top-down strategy when it comes to things like ease of support, updates, and most of all security. All of this means centralized management of a mobile rollout is becoming increasingly important.

Ubitexx realizes the importance of centralized device management and thus developed ubi-Suite:

"ubi-Suite enables companies, public administrations, mobile software manufacturers and service providers to setup for the first time Smartphones and PDAs of mobile employees centrally and to administrate them -over the air. Smartphones and PDAs with Windows Mobile operating system can be administrated centrally with ubi-Suite – [resulting] in resource-saving."

Thanks to our relationship with Ubitexx, DataViz is able to provide an over the air distribution channel for Documents To Go via ubi-Suite’s central device management.

"We offer a high-performance client-server platform for automatic distribution of DATAVIZ software to mobile end devices, central administration of user rights, configuration of devices and software.

This absolutely innovative Windows Mobile based solution in combination with DATAVIZ can facilitate und secure the corporate use of Smartphones and PDAs significantly. The package allows enterprises to experience the full power of DATAVIZ Windows Mobile products in line with an easy and comfortable handling and great performance benefits in the roll-out."

Mail for Exchange v. 2.3

Nokia's Mail for Exchange v. 2.3Nokia recently released a Mail for Exchange update, making the current version 2.3. According to Eseries.org, there's really only one main feature that has been added:

When trying to synchronize with a server that has an expired certificate, the user is now given the choice of continuing the synchronization. Previously, the scenario resulted in an error and the synchronization was stopped.

One complaint I've been seeing is that there is still no subfolder support included with Mail for Exchange. Lucky for you, there is an alternative!
