DataViz & Android

DataViz mobile office products are coming to Android!

ACME_android.jpgOk, let’s be honest here; those of you who know DataViz and our recent development history knew it was only a matter of time. We started our mobile journey 10 years ago with Office document editing on Palm. Then we spread the love to Symbian and Windows Mobile. We became Exchange ActiveSync experts and started delivering your email, calendar, contacts and attachments on the world’s most popular smartphones. This year we added document editing to your BlackBerry, and we’ll be doing the same in a very unique way for your iPhone. So what’s left? Android, of course!

With the hype and initial success of the T-Mobile G1, the recently announced Agora, and the new direction announced by our friends at Motorola, we thought it was time to let everyone know where DataViz stands. So, for the Android lovers and admirers, we figured we’d go ahead and make it official: DataViz will be bringing Documents To Go and RoadSync to the Android platform in 2009! I can't share much more about this right now, but I will tell you we have a team plugging away as we speak. I’ve seen what they’ve done so far and must say I’m impressed (note the screenshot on the left; that’s not just a bunch of Photoshop work, that’s the real deal!).

We want to keep you informed throughout the development process of our Android apps so we’ve created a notification list. Just go to the Android page at DataViz.com, give us your email and tell us which app you’re interested in (Documents To Go, RoadSync, or both!). We’ll make sure you’re the first to know anytime we have news to share.

UPDATE: Documents To Go and a FREE Beta of RoadSync are now available in the Android Market!

@David: Thanks for your feedback; I definitely understanding what you're saying but please keep in mind this is a first release. There's a difficult balance here: If we were to add all of these little items upfront, the development time would be extended big time...you certainly wouldn't have our app available in the market today (then, instead of having people say 'why is there no find function', we'd have people saying 'why isn't this app available yet'...its a balance).

Remember that when you're comparing to the 'standard' set by previous versions on other platforms, you're talking about platforms that we've been developing on for a while: perhaps Palm, which is on version 11, or maybe even BlackBerry, which has already gone through 7 minor updates for bug fixes and free new features.

This is certainly not a 'one and done' release. We're very much committed to Android and there will be plenty of updates and new features coming!

I was a happy user of DocumentsToGo for palm, but the Android version is disappointing. Unless I am missing something, there is no find function, no go to page function, no way of getting to the middle of a long document other than paging through it, until you have paged through it once and put bookmarks everywhere you might want to go.

That is not up to the standard of previous versions, or what people expect of a word processor.

Well, the web article referenced below from PCMag states, "The program doesn't seem to handle folders, though, and e-mail comes through as plain text rather than HTML." Alternative applications support both these features for 2003 Exchange (that also support ActiveSync Push) and that's why I was asking if this article was incorrect. Without these features it would come down to price I guess.

I will keep checking the website for updates as I was never notified from my signup on the DataViz webstie of the Documents To Go application being released.

In case you can't tell I am anxious to see what RoadSync can provide :). I am holding out on purchasing an Exchange app until I have a chance to see what features are included in RoadSync.

Thanks.

@ Dave:

Can't comment on RoadSync right now..where are you finding all this info? All I can say about RoadSync is that there's more info coming quite soon so keep an eye out. More details about Documents To Go coming shortly as well!

Thanks for throwing us a bone! Documents To Go is now available but RoadSync is not yet available. Can you share a date yet? Also, it appears that it won't have HTML for 2003 Exchange and won't support exchange folders? Is this accurate?

@ Trinen:

Not much I can share about that now. There's an interesting article on PCMag's website that will give you Sascha Segan's thoughts from MWC: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2341163,00.asp

There are also some screenshots: http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow/0,1206,l%253D237142%2526a%253D237140,00.asp

That's the best I can do for now. Stay tuned...

This sounds great, but really, throw a dog a bone. How soon cn you provide us with a real Exchange solution? The existing apps just don't do the job and you look like the only company taking the task seriously. Is there a date range you're shooting for?

Thank you for this! Really useful feature that will help anyone in the business field that rely on these types of documents! Cant wait to get my hands on it.
