BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1 SP5 Available

Including Free/Busy Lookup and Improved Attachment Support

blackberry-phones.jpgA Blackberry Enterprise Server upgrade (4.1 SP5) was officially released by RIM a few days ago. This upgrade includes some much anticipated features such as free/busy calendar look-up and also added attachment support (downloading and editing of native email attachments).

It's important to note that some of these features will also require updated BlackBerry Device Software 4.5 (no official word at this point on when Device Software 4.5 will be available).

As far as Documents To Go is concerned, this is an important update as we will be providing support to edit native documents and email attachments on your BlackBerry. We know you've all been waiting patiently for Documents To Go to be available. This release is a big step in the right direction. More info should be available in the near future. Thanks to all of you for your patience, we promise Documents To Go for BlackBerry will be worth the wait! Mail for Exchange v. 2.3

Nokia's Mail for Exchange v. 2.3Nokia recently released a Mail for Exchange update, making the current version 2.3. According to Eseries.org, there's really only one main feature that has been added:

When trying to synchronize with a server that has an expired certificate, the user is now given the choice of continuing the synchronization. Previously, the scenario resulted in an error and the synchronization was stopped.

One complaint I've been seeing is that there is still no subfolder support included with Mail for Exchange. Lucky for you, there is an alternative!

Apple Announces iPhone SDK

What does this mean for DataViz?

DataViz iPhone ApplicationsiPhone users, potential users, and admirers will surely be happy to know that Apple took a big step toward creating a development community for the iPhone this week by announcing a Software Development Kit (SDK) for the iPhone. From the words of Mr. Jobs himself:

We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.

Apple’s original stance on application development for the iPhone came in the form of a suggestion: create web-based applications that can be accessed through the iPhone’s Safari web browser. This was disappointing news to developers of mobile applications who are used to having much more access. Palm, for example, has had a large developer community for years. One could certainly argue that the level of growth they achieved would not have been possible without third party software development.

In yesterday’s press release, Jobs said the SDK will not be available until February of 2008 because they want to open up the platform while keeping the device safe from viruses.

This is no easy task. …As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target. … We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.

So what does this mean for DataViz, you ask? Hard to say at this point (after all, the SDK was only announced yesterday and won’t be available for a few months), but imagine Exchange ActiveSync access to your email, editing Office files, and having all of your PINs and passwords encrypted and easily accessed on your new iPhone!

We’ve been getting more and more requests each day asking us - begging, in some cases - to bring our applications to the iPhone, specifically Documents To Go, RoadSync, and Passwords Plus. Thanks to this announcement, we’ll be able to give this serious consideration. You can bet we’ll have our hands on this SDK as soon as possible. I can’t guarantee anything, but please, if you are interested in having DataViz software on your iPhone, let us know!

Exchange 2007 RTM

ExchangeLogo copy.jpg
We've been talking about Exchange 2007 for a while now and beta versions have been floating around for months. However, last Friday Microsoft officially signed off on Exchange Server 2007. It should be interesting to see how quickly organizations start adopting Exchange 2007. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer doesn't seem too conserned. In speaking about Vista, Office 07 and Exchange 07 he said the following:

“These are game-changing products... We expect that more than 200 million people will be using at least one of these products by the end of 2007.”

The folks in Redmond say that Exchange Server 2003 had the fastest adpotion of any of their past exchange offerings. We'll see if Exchange 07 can do the same. If any of you are already using Exchange 07 and have any thoughts, please share.

Sprint Expands Email Services

Free Client Provides 'Push-like' Email

sprintlogo.jpg Sprint has announced a Java-based POP and IMAP email client to allow ‘push-like’ email support on their devices. The client will support several email accounts and is being offered free of charge by Sprint to customers who have a data plan.

The service (provided by Seven) is considered ‘push-like’ because it uses SMS technology to deliver the message to the email client and also trigger a new mail alert.

Mobile email, more specifically push email, is often considered a feature utilized only by more sophisticated smartphones. Sprint and Seven are using their technologies to try to bring the technology to a larger number of users.

“This is taking an enterprise grade e-mail experience to mass-market phones,” - Ari Backholm, VP of Marketing & Product Management, Seven

Documents To Go 9 Now Available

InTact Technology Eliminates the Need for Synchronization

DataViz announced an upgrade to their mobile office suite, Documents To Go, for Palm OS 5 handhelds. Most Palm users will already be familiar with Documents To Go as a version of it comes with most Palm OS 5 handheld devices. The core functionality will be the same: users have the ability to view, edit, and create Microsoft Office files and also view native PDF documents and graphic files such as .jpg and .bmp graphics.

One of the big new features in version 9 is DataViz’ InTact Technology. InTact was developed by DataViz to allow users to work directly with their native files, no translation or synchronization necessary. The technology in older versions (called DocSync) would retain formatting; however it required a sync with the desktop. Now, users can transfer documents back and forth via email, Bluetooth, IR, etc, and all original formatting will be maintained (which is important for users who spend a lot of time on the road).

Other features include updates to the Word To Go and Sheet To Go applications to support things like footnotes, endnotes, and new excel charts. There is also a new file explorer to allow easy navigation through folders on an expansion card.
