Ovi Store for Maemo

Yesterday Nokia released a software update for the Maemo 5 powered Nokia N900. The major addition in this release is access to Maemo applications via Ovi Store. Nokia has had many homes for software over the last few years (Download!, Mosh, etc) but Ovi brings the best of each together.

Among the apps you'll find in the Maemo Ovi Store: Documents To Go Viewer Edition Trial. Not that you should really need to get it from there because there's already an icon on your N900 to download the Documents To Go Viewer. But if you prefer to get your apps directly from Ovi, or wanna leave some love in the form of a rating or review, have at it!

Nokia's 2010 Plans

nokia-logo.jpgFirst, let me wish you all a happy Capital Markets Day!

Capital Markets Day is a chance for Nokia is akin to a state of the union as well as an overview of plans for the upcoming year specifically tailored to Nokia investors. However the information that comes out of this event is usually quite interesting for us non-owners as well. A press release issued today proves that this year is no exception. Here's a couple high points:

  • Industry-wide mobile device volumes expected to increase 10% in 2010 (Nokias volume to remain flat)
  • Commitment to Symbian: major milestones expected mid-year 2010, and another near the end of the year.
  • First Maemo 6 device to be released second half of 2010

Our friend Rafe Blandford of AllAboutSymbian.com shared his expert opinion in a great blog post this morning thats definitely worth checking out.

As for DataViz, we've been developing for Nokia's Symbian devices for quite a while and we're glad to see they're committed to continued development/improvement. Also, we're very excited about the opportunity to develop for Maemo as it appears to be a OS that will continue to raise the bar for user experience.

Keep your eye out for an announcement from us regarding Maemo and the N900 next week.
